'Unusual Delicacies' by Sam Jackson

If you feel that you've gotten into a bit of a rut when it comes to eating and your standard dinners are beginning to bore you, you know its time to take a look around for something new and interesting to try. Luckily enough, with a current public interest in interesting foods from around the globe, there are plenty of tasty snacks and dishes out there for you to experiment with, so take a look and see what you can find.

1.Reindeer steak

While at first you might have thoughts about Santa's team of eight, they'll soon be banished when you try this Canadian delicacy. While it has made its way south to the United States, it is still fairly hard to find, so if you get a chance, give it a shot.

2.Crocodile meat

Crocodiles are one of the major predators that have been successfully farmed, and you will now see crocodile on the menu at a variety of different restaurants. Crocodile meat is, as you might guess, a little fishy and a little greasy, but quite deliciously rich, and definitely worth a taste whether it is in a soup or has been fried.

3.Nopales

This is a vegetable dish that is made from the tender stem segments of the prickly pear, where all the spines have been removed. They are most often served in Mexico, but they can often be found fresh or canned at various supermarkets. They are crisp, with a slightly tart flavor, and are very healthy, being that they are high in calcium.

4.Lychee

This fruit comes from a evergreen tree that is cultivated in southern China and Southeast Asia. The fruit itself is about the size of a very large marble and though the outside is inedible, it splits easily to allow you to find the very soft, sweet white flesh. While you should avoid the seed, lychee fruit is sweet and quite delicious, and if you can't find any fresh, you are usually able to find them canned in a variety of places.

5.Sylta

If you've ever attended a Swedish smorgasbord, chances are, you have encountered the head cheese known as sylta. Sylta is also known as a jellied meat loaf, and is served alongside ham and sausages with mustard. This distinctive dish contains pork, veal, and onions, as well as plain gelatin, and though most of the eaters have grown up eating it, it is surprisingly easy to develop a taste for this meat product.

6.Borscht

While beets are not normally seen in non-European cuisine, it is hard to deny the appeal of this bright fuschia, Eastern European soup. Beets are the main ingredient, giving the dish its distinctive color, but onions, leeks, cabbage, Polish sausage and lemon juice are also frequently added. A dollop of sour cream is usually served on top or to one side.
